it's been in this same state for the last 5 years. the exact same state just with different names.
What probably screwed up gamearena was the dumb decision to turn on punkbuster when they already knew the greater majority didn't like punkbuster being turned on (I think it was astrobear who turned it on). As soon as it was turned on no one would play and those that did, would join the slashquit server and the rest just didn't know about the slashquit server. I'm not sure how many people cheat (in ra3) to warrant having it for a pub server, if it was a competition (ra3, duel whatever) then sure have it on.
I was one of those players who stopped playing ra3 after punkbuster was turned on and I haven't been playing as much (I only ever play CA and have played ra3 1v1 a bunch of times) because ctf is much more interesting then ra3 to me.
I'm not sure why people don't play on the slashquit server especially when it provides a better ping to most quakers then the gameareana server does.
CTF had a bit of a dead moment with the servers going empty for about 2 - 3 weeks after TF2 was released, then I guess some people missed the ctf action or just didn't like TF2. Quake3 has always been hanging on a string for quite a while and eventually that string is going to snap, whenever that happens I don't know. There are still new players joining Quake3 even when they're getting smashed in ctf which I guess is encouraging.
Also, if any of the slashquit guys are reading this..could the muting of spectators on the ctf server be turned off by default. Its pretty annoying when players don't realise that someone has disconnected and another has joined but can't join a team because no one knows that player has changed name 50 times to unlock/unlock!/unlock11!!1oneone etc.
i dont think ive ever seen a cheater in q3, dunno why pb needs to be on at all (how many times has there been trouble on sq servers?)
its always the same old people who top the list, and the most variety you'll get is those same old people using an alias
Yeah, it's in a pretty sorry state at the moment. And I totally disagree that it's the same state it was 5 years ago. I've probably been playing for a bit more than a year now, and even back then CA would be absolutely cranking every night of the week. Now you're lucky to get a CA game going, and if it happens, its one round of map 11 and that's it... occasionally a callvote restarts map 11.
It's hard to even get CA on map 1 going.

well about this situation, as my name states, if we all just use a name that we could all identify with then people would get to know people. This is an old game but so what? Some of us still play it so why should it be on it's last legs? Hell keep it going, we just want all the people that do play this game to come out of the cobwebs. Let's give it a chance shall we? I don't think that by having such negative feelings about it is going to keep it alive... besides if we get people that we know involved, then this could be something big in the making. I just downloaded q3 again. I will start playing it again from tonight, thus saving ra3 single handedly.
i prefer the ra3 netcode over the cpma net code, maybe i am just more used to it. To me it feels more consistent, not as many rails hitting when it appears they shouldnt and vice versa.
Game arena doesnt have PB on it.
I cant seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong with CPMA as far as net settings are concerned. I've tried a number of settings but it still feels unresponsive as shit. I wanna get into dueling but having my rockets leave the gun half a second after I click fire is just fucking frustrating. It cant be all because of latency since I get the same ping on the RA3 server :(
CPMA duel arena only supports 1 player per team. IE you cannot run 2v2 or more when having a winner stays in, loser cycles situation.
Hence why RA3 1.76 is still used.
Yeah, ra3 just feels right for me. Other mods all feel laggy, and my rails never seem to hit... and generally require thought. In ra3 I just wait for the words fight and then click a few times. And most of the time I get a nice break to drink my drink, eat my food, or scratch my itch, etc.
I'll be sad when it finally kicks it.

Why isn't RA3 1.77 used? Didn't it have cool additions like lowering rail damage to 75?
There's a 1.77? AFAIK development stopped at 1.76. There was a beta after that that had pip drag/drop windows like in ufreeze but nothing was finished. Development stopped when they went to work on ra4.

I don't have a problem with astro, he only put pb back on after a bunch of people whinged about the lack of it. After a bunch more people whinged about it being ON again (including me, cug, and Azza) he turned it OFF again, and then there was an update to PB that was supposed to fix the frame dropping and lag issues so it got turned ON again, then we all whinged about it again because it didn't fix the frame dropping and lag issues, and it has ended up OFF again. In terms of pb astro has been doing what the community wanted as far as the forum feedback went, as opposed to doing whatever he wants.
For further reading I'd suggest checking out the GA Quake forums, there are 4 or 5 threads on the topic with a whole lot of opinion.
I've always gotten a better ping to GA, but despite this the SQ's servers always 'felt' better, less spongey.
yeah, SQ servers feel alot more fluent then GA. I dont play on GA anymore for that reason alone.
I play on whatever the people are playing on. That's usually what dictates my choice..
your powers of deduction are amazing. but unfortunately you can attribute pb being put back on entirely to astrobear. i asked him to ban you two because you both have been tools for a long time, and i specifically told him you don't need to put pb back on to do it and linked him to a game admin site detailing all the rcon commands.
but to be quite frank i couldn't care less if pb was put back on gamearena. it's a shit server and people should play on slashquit anyway, not only for the better pings but a better environment where idiots aren't tolerated and admins actually know how to use rcon commands.
the real story behind all this is resiak and dice can't handle a female a gamer playing ra3 and feel the need to talk shit to her for months on end. the people who know me would realise i wouldn't want to get someone banned for using someones name, and the actual reason would be something major.

i actually like a lot of the other maps in ra3. The ol' days when people use to play quite a few maps were good! I've only ever seen ra3map1,11 and I think its 14 (Egyptian type map) get played. People can't handle getting slapped around on a maps where they have to use something other then a rail or lg.
At least with q3 ctf there are quite a few different maps that get played.

I can't remember the maps off the top of my head..but I definitely remember a few maps being fun. The old days ra3map1 was king and it only really ever got played for CA as well. I can barely remember playing ra3map11 a few years ago.
Wench: I think the reason for cp15 not being popular is because its got no rail, lg whoring on that map makes it a little easy but if you were to add a rail on that map it'd make it a real stupid map. So it loses players interest in one way (no rail) but if you add a rail it lose players again because of the campy rail top area that would happen. Lose/Lose for pub games really.
I don't even think the lg dominates the map. Sure it gets used a bit, but in any cp15 game I've played (pub or clan), I always find myself using the shotgun, plasma or rocket...
Shame its not popular on pub. Due to there being no rail, its quite hard to d-stack cp15, and thats all cp14 (especially) and 18 turn in to.. d-stack after 1 cap.

i have an idea... LOCK THE MAP CYCLE, DISABLE MAP VOTES so it only leaves vote next.

Pity the map cycle is: Map1 -> Map11 -> Map12 then back to Map1... a random map cycle would suffice; and im all for disabling map votes as well, the game needs some variety.
