Vista sound crash - STOP error 124

unifex, 01:05pm 11th April go to general discussion

Trying to fix a PC for a mate. Any sound playing on the machine crashes the box with a BSOD. A lot of forums talk about this happening in combination with nVidia video cards, but it is primarily related to sound.

Have tried various driver levels, BIOS versions, different sound cards etc. The closest people got to a fix was by disabling C1E support in the BIOS (apparently worked for Alienware). This didn't work in this case.

Has anybody dealt with this problem before?

After thinking about vista's implementation - I have a feeling it is somehow related to the way Vista's in-built content protection works. Nobody has seemed to come up with this conclusion on any forum I have seen though. If this really is the case, I doubt it will be fixed until SP2...

Bluntz? :)

any sound?

So it crashes when you login and the startup sound plays?
Having the same problem on multiple soundcards is a bit disturbing.

Vista didnt have problems with sound for me :/ on either of my PC's.. Both using onboard realtek ALC889a and ALC6xx (cant remember the specifics of the old box)

Majority of the issues are with the intel chipset mobos..

I should say, windows sound on startup is ok, but any additional sounds kill it :)

Mate is ready to buy a new mobo to fix this issue.

have you enabled crashdumps and ran a analysing tool over the dmp file. it will tell you exactly which driver is at fault including filenames etc

the default minidumps should have enough info in them too.

"I solved the STOP 0x124 error on my computer some months ago by enabling
32-Bit Disk Access for all my hard disks in the BIOS.

I had one recurrance a few days ago, and tracked it down to
overheating. Refilling the tank in my water cooler fixed the problem."
