I really don't like the direction "competitive esports" is going :>
just digging themselves further into the ground weoooo
I don't see what your so surprised about.... below is a copy of a story I posted on my site a few weeks back.
Well Halo 3 has been on sale for 7 day's now, and dear god... what a 7 days it's been! Some jaw-dropping stats have come out of Bungie's latest goldmine, and no doubt there will be more milestones hit in the near future! Here's a few of the major stats, all related to Halo 3
- Halo 3 has made history as one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time (keep in mind, entertainment includes video games, movies, cinema, music etc).
- In the first week of sales Halo 3 has brought in over $300 Million world wide.
- More than 2.7 million players have logged on to Xbox LIVE to play Halo 3 in the first week of sales, representing almost one third of Xbox LIVE's 7 million members around the planet.
- In the first 24hrs from launch Xbox LIVE players accrued more than 3.6 million hours of gameplay, and by the end of the first week they have now accrued more than 40 million hours of gameplay! This equals more than 4,500 years on CONTINUOUS gameplay!
Closer to home, here's a few Australian stats for you
- In the first week of sales Halo 3 has sold 70,000 copies
- Halo 3 and accessories have broken Australia's previous record for software sales by generating more than $9 million in revenue
so? console gaming shouldn't be considered a viable platform for PROFESSIONAL gaming.
Why not zeal0r? Because its not your preference?
Console gaming is far more accessible to the main stream then PC gaming... The same way soccer is far more accessible over say.. darts.
I think xbox, and other console systems are very viable option for competitive gaming, weather you like it or not.
p.s This doesn't mean in any way shape or form that I like console gamers stealing our (PC gamers) thunder... but you better learn to like it - because it's happening.
it's not a true measure of skill imo, you can't have the amount of control over the game especially with aim.
a lot more variables go into the equation when you have the control over the game a keyboard and mouse gives you.
sorry for thinking playing a sub-standard game (in regards to true competition) using a silly controller isn't worth a 250 grand 1st prize.
so, it's not because it's not my 'preference', to me it's like giving someone 10 times the amount of prize money i've seen for a quake comp to a game which hardly requires the same amount of skill.
zeal is just having a cry that so much effort spent on quake is wasted when there are bigger prizes for other games :D
Nah but I agree with him though
It is like a higher paying job
Who wouldn't whore a shitty job or game because it pays more well at the end of the day
even if it uses less skill... and less skill :D
games are games, if anything they are stepping up the $$$ notch which I reckon is a fucking d00zie
I never said anything about console games requiring equal skill. They have more money because of the player base.. its quite simply really.
zeal0r... your a dick, lol. Being good enough to take that prize money means you need skill, a LOT of skill. You ever tried converting your PC FPS skills over onto a console? I bet you couldn't stand a chance against those dudes (neither could I mind you).
The whole idea is that its DIFFERENT skill, it's not keyboard and mouse skill, but it's sure as fuck still reaction time skill... skill of knowing maps and being able to aim.. you just have to do it another way. Don't kid yourself for a second that these guys use "less skill", because if you go play in their world you'll get your shit wrecked - just like they would in yours. Don't be so naive dude...
On the same subject... anyone else notice that "a prize" is given to the top 64 (SIXTY FOUR) places?! Holy mother of crap.... that tournament is going to be fucking batshit insane with the number of entries. I think it's a great thing and we need to see more of it personally.
zealor you're an idiot, don't be ignorant.
any game at the highest level requires insane amounts of skill, whether you recognize it or not.
Thrax is completely right, you wouldn't be able to compete with them and they wouldn't be able to compete with you. I have a 360 and i can understand just how hard it is to be amazing at halo, it's not hard to realise why the top players stand out.
This is good news for competitive xbox gaming.
It really shouldn't matter if your not a competitive Halo 3 player (LOL!) so theres a huge pay out for the winner; id rather have sex.
zeal is right. you may be the greatest halo player in the world, but in the end you're just a fucking idiot.
let me explain it for you so guys so you can understand.
EVERYONE who plays halo 3 on the xbox has a capped level of skill. Therefore, without having to go into details, it doesn't give the people with insane amounts of skill to go past the cap, it's limited to the controller. All it comes down to is strategy and experience. Every controller moves the crosshair the same speed as the others for example.
reaction time skill? i think you're being naive, i may see someone out of the corner of my eye long before the crosshair can be moved using the xbox controller, same with everyone else. so there goes your reacion time theory.
yeah sure the best player might win USUALLY, but out of 4000 competitors lets say 100 are the elite group and always win. i'd bet any money it's anyones game in that top percentage of players, and i gurantee the same person won't win two times in a row.
my point - capped skill = random games, and in the end it comes down to who's luckiest on the day.
it's not different skill, anyone can learn to aim using an xbox controller, and apart from aim it's the same skill.
so compare this to a game like q3 on the pc. there's no limit to how good you can be, the only thing that determines what level you play at is you. if you see someone out of the corner of your eye you can move the crosshair to them as fast as you want. there's no cap on skill level, so the person with the highest skill can TRULY win.
the top players of halo 3 on the xbox are called capped to a certain level and cannot go past, and sorry - experience and strategy can only go so far in a game like halo.
btw, try using valid points when trying to converse with me instead of calling me an idiot, ta.
Have you even played Halo 3? there are settings that allow you to change both axis sensitivity's. further more there are some people out there that have exceptional percussion with a controller, its bullshit some of the things they can do and lastly; what? would prefer them to make a PC version and make the halo community more abhorrent? the only reason that there is such a huge pay out for the comp is because halo 3 is a really popular game, they are only trying to milk it for all its worth, they don't give two shits about how much you whine.
you think i don't understand it's a popular game which is why the prize is so big?
the skill level is still capped even with the sensitivity changes, every professional pc player will agree with me.
hell, even fatal1ty has the same view as me, go argue with him too.

Wow.. how about you do some research before making completely wrong statements like the one quoted? The same teams DO win over and over again. Take a look at MLG's pro teams such as Final Boss and Str8 Rippin - always in the top 3 at xbox events. I fail to see how this comes down to luck when they're doing it more consistently then the top counter-strike teams in the world... which might I add, are playing on the PC.
And i think you are wrong when you say the skill level is capped, your comparing keyboard and mouse to a controller, i think a better word for it would be different. i think that cpl are exploring new avenues for professional gaming, ie. consoles. imho pc gameing and console gameing shouldn't be compared as far as skill or controls are concerned, because they are actually quite different. but are you more upset because there is such a huge payout for a consol game or the fact that they are bringing consol gaming into CPL?
either way halo 3 is a dog shit of a game, unless you're drunk playing split screen.
when they port quake 3 across to xbox and use a mouse and a keyboard, then i'll consider it roughly the same skill level.
Halo has a huge player base and following so this really doesnt suprise me at all.
I know i couldnt play a fps game like halo with a controller hehe.. so i give them credit for having
the skill to do it :)
i feel like fatal1ty has the last say as well.
i played Redfaction on ps2 verusin a friend's little brother got smashed so hard, but you can actually do awesome flick shots on ps2 controller. Its not limited and there is no such thing as capped level of skill unless your name is c0mmy.
who said anything about teams wench? a lot more variables go into the game when teams are concerned, i'm talking about individual play.
(havent read the replies - not going to)
Consoles are definitely an arena worthy of professionalism like all other competitive arenas. I only have one concern though. Why are all the PC based e-sports leagues jumping ship?
The last thing I heard from Chris Moncivalles was sarcasm, over how well the console event ran. He gave me the impression that it was going to change, but I guess his arguement failed.
The other thing worth mentioning is that Valve had TF2 running on a console, and playing within a server filled with PC players. I was told (by a 3rd party) that they weren't going to have it running in the real world, but I can't find that quote anywhere (hmm, chinese whispers?). Either way, a joystick vs a mouse is a one sided fight.
On the game itself, Halo 3. I heard it was a big flop & people were cancelling their pre-orders???
zeal0r said...who said anything about teams wench? a lot more variables go into the game when teams are concerned, i'm talking about individual play.
You still have individuals standing out in team games. I don't quite under stand your point.
noone understands zeal0r's point.
Get with the program man, carrying on about capped skill levels and shit... you think soccer players have capped skill levels compared to say... UFC, cause they can only touch the ball with their feet? ITS A DIFFERENT SPORT
Consoles... PC... different sports. Get a clue.
I don't even see what your whinging about... you've already said you understand why the prize money is so big. My first post clearly shows how big of a success Halo 3 has been thus far... so wheat's your issue?
I somehow don't think they will have the console TF2 able to join pc TF2 players, unless of course the developers are stupid.
Halo is actually quite fun multiplayer, the campaign was kinda lame, especially how they executed the ending (*YAWN*). regardless i still like playing Halo 3.
The main difference between playing an fps game on console compared to PC is that your a fricken retard. Of course the skill is capped. Its like the special olympics of first person shooter games. They are NOT different sports, they are handicapped. (insert special Olympics retard running pic here)
rofl, nice intelligent comment right there, thanks for that ninja. So any decent non-retard (PC player in your mind) could easily out-do these guys at their "special olympics" ? Meaning yourself of course. Your decent at games on PC, so by your logic you would take home that prize money right? Unless you got beat by a pack of "retards". The only handicapped person here is you dude.
on the TF2 thing... they've had CS running on PC and Xbox for god knows how long now, but they'll never mix because you can't compare thumb-joysticks to a kb and mouse. blah blah blah, my previous statement about being different sports.
thrax said...on the TF2 thing... they've had CS running on PC and Xbox for god knows how long now, but they'll never mix because you can't compare thumb-joysticks to a kb and mouse. blah blah blah, my previous statement about being different sports.
Its good to see evolution heading backwards. Granted consoles can be fun, but I do feel that I've moved onto something bigger & better with PCs. I think thats the sole reason I bought the Wii, their controller was a step in the right direction.
hrm, didn't microsoft have something to do with the making of halo 3? if so, I'd say it would explain the big purse. I remember they had a huge competition for age of empires 2, soon after it came out i think. if sponsor = microsoft, then yeah, you can expect them to use whatever it takes to get people to play (though i have nfi if microsoft is sponsoring or not. but i think they'll have a hand whether they come out and say it or not haha).
in any case, the mere fact that xbox uses a controller doesn't mean it doesnt require skill. sure, people with controller might not be able to compete with mouse users, but controller vs controller would be determined by whoever is better with the controller. ie skill. and with huge playerbase, large money/comp is only to be expected i guess.
but even though i understand that, I still agree with zeal0r and ninja on this. rather gay how controller has more money than mouse. and thats an emotional opinion ;p
Who cares, none of us have the time to be pro gamers anymore, so lets just enjoy the show from the side lines :D
P.s. TF2 WAR TONIGHT WHAT!!
Grrdian: Up until very recently (a matter of weeks) Microsoft owned a portion (half, maybe all?) of Bungie (who developed Halo). Now Bungie have bought themselves back and left the umbrella of Microsoft, however there is still extremely strong ties and relations between the two.
thrax said...however there is still extremely strong ties and relations between the two.
not half obvious considering how much money they have made for one another :P
oh for sure!
I believe the split was due to Bungie wanting to move on other projects that MS didn't want to be a part of. That being said, for all the parts that MS do want to be in on, they still hold hands and skip through the open plains of cash country together.
My original speculation was that Bungie's main project they wanted to pursue was the Halo movie, but the "Halo movie is officially dead" announcement came within 12 hours of the split.... I still speculate that the original Halo movie project is dead, and now Bungie will start fresh with the idea and do it the way they want without any stalls from MS. All speculation tho, I have no REAL idea of anything related to Bungie's future projects.
i wish you and i could skip through cash country together.. that'd be hell.
rofl @ both of you, that gave me quite the giggle at work

Yeah, and if you happen to win this event you're just a fucking idiot with a whole lotta money that you don't have, hah.
Hahaha, the idiots will be the last ones laughing when there cruising to the bank $250k up.
ryan thats possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen.
Not like CPL are going to actually pay out the money anyways >)
that was funny and i have never played halo at all
haha yeah 'Zero Punctuation' is good.
I can see us all playing Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure.
